Robert Downey Jr. Joins Original X-Men Reunion at Comic-Con Ahead of Avengers: Doomsday

More than two decades after the first X-Men film helped redefine superhero movies, Robert Downey Jr. shared the Comic-Con spotlight with several original cast members during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation in San Diego. The highly anticipated reunion served as another major preview for Avengers: Doomsday, the blockbuster crossover scheduled to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18.
The panel brought together fan favorites from different eras of Marvel storytelling, reflecting just how much the cinematic universe has expanded since the original X-Men debuted in 2000. While Robert Downey Jr. has long been associated with Iron Man, his appearance alongside the returning mutant heroes highlighted Marvel’s next ambitious chapter.
James Marsden (52), Rebecca Romijn (53), and Kelsey Grammer (71) reunited onstage, representing the original actors behind Cyclops, Mystique and Beast. Their appearance drew loud applause from fans inside Hall H, where Marvel Studios officially showcased its growing ensemble for Avengers: Doomsday.
Patrick Stewart (86), Sir Ian McKellen (87) and Alan Cumming (61), who are also expected to return in the upcoming film, did not appear during the Comic-Con presentation. Even so, the gathering marked one of the largest public reunions for the original X-Men cast in years.
Marvel also welcomed Tenoch Huerta, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman and David Harbour to the stage, teasing how characters from different corners of the Marvel universe will share the screen in the next Avengers installment. Studio president Kevin Feige joined directors Joe and Anthony Russo as the panel celebrated the scale of the upcoming crossover.
Why Robert Downey Jr. and the X-Men Reunion Matters for Marvel
Although the event centered on the returning X-Men, Robert Downey Jr. remained one of the biggest attractions for fans attending Comic-Con. His presence reinforced Marvel Studios’ commitment to connecting legacy characters with a new generation of heroes as the Multiverse Saga moves toward its biggest showdown.
For longtime Marvel fans, the reunion also represented a full-circle moment. Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially launched with Iron Man in 2008, Fox’s X-Men franchise had already proven that comic-book adaptations could become major Hollywood successes. Beginning with Bryan Singer’s X-Men in 2000, the series expanded with X2 in 2003 and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006 before growing into a larger franchise that included Wolverine films, prequels, Logan and the hugely successful Deadpool movies.
For years, however, the X-Men remained separated from the Avengers because the film rights belonged to 20th Century Fox. That changed after Disney completed its acquisition of Fox in 2019, giving Marvel Studios creative control over the mutant characters and making a crossover possible for the first time.
Marvel has gradually introduced familiar faces into the MCU over the past several years. Patrick Stewart returned as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, while Kelsey Grammer surprised audiences with a Beast cameo in The Marvels. The multiverse concept expanded further in Deadpool & Wolverine, setting the stage for an even larger ensemble in Avengers: Doomsday.
Among those expected to reprise their iconic roles are Stewart, McKellen, Marsden, Grammer, Romijn and Cumming, along with Channing Tatum, who is set to return as Gambit following his appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine. Together, they will join the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Wakanda’s heroes against Doctor Doom.
Marvel has not revealed the full plot for Avengers: Doomsday, but the Comic-Con presentation made one thing clear: the studio is leaning into nostalgia while introducing a new era of interconnected storytelling. Seeing Robert Downey Jr. standing alongside actors who helped launch the superhero movie boom underscored how Marvel plans to blend its past with its future.
With Avengers: Doomsday scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 18, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see one of Marvel’s most ambitious crossovers finally become reality.
