Powerball drawing history: how long has this jackpot been building?

The current run traces back to May 2, 2026, the last time someone actually hit the Powerball jackpot. That win, worth an estimated $20 million, was split between two ticket holders one in Florida and one in Texas. Every drawing since has come up empty on the top prize, three nights a week, allowing the pot to swell toward the upper end of the game’s all-time list.

That’s not to say nobody’s winning anything. Powerball pays out prizes across nine tiers, from a $4 match on the red ball alone up to the jackpot itself, and thousands of smaller prizes get claimed at every single drawing.

Did anyone win the Powerball in Maryland?

While the jackpot keeps slipping away nationally, Maryland players have had a notably good few weeks. A ticket sold at a 7-Eleven on Rhode Island Avenue in College Park matched five numbers in the Aug. 1 drawing and missed the jackpot only because it didn’t match the Powerball, earning a $1 million prize. A separate ticket sold nearby, at Max Liquors in Catonsville, matched four numbers plus the Powerball for a $50,000 payout.

That wasn’t a one-off. It marked the second consecutive drawing to produce a $1 million winner in the state, following a ticket sold July 29 at a Royal Farms in Odenton. Maryland lottery officials say players in the state have collected more than $6 million in prizes since the jackpot was last won in May, out of tens of thousands of winning tickets sold there in just the past week.

Winners in Maryland, as in every state, have 182 days from the drawing date to come forward and claim a prize plenty of time, but a deadline lottery officials urge people to keep in mind if a ticket turns out to be a winner.

The jackpot’s size has renewed attention on what to do if a ticket does hit all six numbers, and financial professionals who’ve walked past winners through the process offer a fairly consistent playbook.

Rule one: stay quiet. “If you’re lucky enough to win the lottery, keep it quiet. Get organized and make a plan. Consider staying anonymous, if it’s a possibility,” financial and investment advisor Rob Burnette told USA TODAY.

Rule two: don’t lose the ticket, and don’t rush to claim it without a team in place.
