Dinner Suit vs Business Suit: What are their differences and when to wear them?

When it comes to suits, it’s not just about appearances. It is also about wearing the right outfit for the show. At the first sight, it may seem a business suit and a dinner suit are the same collections of clothing, but both suit different events. One is for those with a professional or semi-formal look, and the other is for formal evening wear and for black-tie events.

Also called a tuxedo, a dinner suit is a style of formal attire worn to a black-tie event. In the UK, the phrase “dinner suit” is more commonly used; for the Americans, the term ‘tuxedo’ helps to bring the expression into better circulation. The plain fabric, notch lapels, plain buttons and pants are typical of the business suit. The dinner suit consists of satin lapels, satin-covered buttons and satin-covered trousers lapel.

A business suit may be paired with a more stylized dress shirt and tie while a dinner suit is typically worn with a white dress shirt, and bow tie. Dressed in a business style is the smartest look for business and semi-formal events, and dinner suits are for black tie and formal evening events.

How to Style a Business Suit

When dressing for the job, wear a business suit and keep it simple. Opt for a suit that fits properly and is either navy or charcoal (or dark gray or black). Wear it with a clean dress shirt, a traditional tie, leather shoes and few accessories.

For classical appearance, wear a white or light blue shirt, and do not go crazy with the silhouette of the silk band. If you’re aiming to create a more contemporary appearance, a slim fit suit, a patterned tie, or a subtle pocket square would be the perfect choices. But, when it comes to professional life, steer clear of loud colors and “too much pattern.”

Shoes should be shined and of the correct color to match your suit. Black shoes go with black, charcoal and dark gray suits. For shoes, the options include anything from brown, to navy, blue, beige, and lighter gray suits.

How to Style a Dinner Suit

Fashion accessories should be used when wearing a dinner suit. The most basic, safe and traditional style is a black dinner suit, and a white dress shirt, black bow tie, black patent leather shoes and cufflinks.

If the outing is for a classy occasion opt for jackets with satin high lapels or a shawl collar. Ensure trousers have satin side stripe, and do not wear a regular business belt. The outfit can be completed with a waist covering, like a cummerbund or formal waistcoat.

If the event is a summer or destination event, a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo trousers can be a stylish choice. For formal events with a more relaxed vibe, a deep burgundy, emerald or midnight blue velvet dinner jacket can also be good, though it must be worn judiciously.
